His duties included jumping out of helicopters to rescue pilots whose planes were shot down in the Pacific Ocean. New Office Games

We have a new Patient Appreciation game coming! On Monday, April 19 we will be debuting Pet Match-up. Match the staff member to their pet, and you could win 4 tickets to the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific. Stop by our office any time to play. The game runs through the end of June.

And beginning in June, we will be collecting your postcards from the road. Prizes will be given in categories such as Farthest Distance Traveled, Funniest Postcard, Most Exotic Location, etc. This game will run from June through August.

Steak or Pudding?

I was recently visiting a relative in a nursing home. I was in the home’s cafeteria for breakfast and noticed several containers of “pudding.” I asked the cafeteria worker why they were serving so many different types of pudding for breakfast. The worker laughed and said that’s not pudding that’s breakfast puree. I was so amazed I had to take a picture of it. The bright yellow “pudding in the top corner is pureed scrambled eggs, the dark brown “pudding” is pureed blueberry scones, the light brown “pudding” is pureed sausages.

As a dentist this affected me deeply. How sad that people feel they must eat pureed food when there is a treatment available that enables you to chew comfortably, even with dentures. I feel this treatment, MINI-IMPLANTS, is one of the best things I can do for my patients. If you are a denture wearer, please come into my office for a free consultation on mini-implants. You can eat steak and chew and chew and chew or you can eat “pudding.” Which would you rather eat?

Project Patriot

You may already be aware that Cypress Family Dental and Dr. Wood are proud of our troops, and are actively involved in supporting them as much as we can. We have paired with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Susan B. Anthony Chapter in support of their Project Patriot. The goal of Project Patriot is to collect donations to send gift boxes to soldiers overseas. Dozens of boxes have been sent, and the DAR have received many thank yous from these soldiers. Below is a sampling of some of these letters:

"I just wanted to thank you for the care package that you sent to one of the soldiers here in Iraq. I just happened to get your card and wanted to thank you for your kindness and thoughtfulness, receiving these packages are a huge morale booster for the military men and women. Yesterday we had the drawing for the winner of the big-screen TV. To be eligible, patients needed to refer another patient to the practice. There were many patients in the drawing. The Orange County Fire Authority Station 17 stopped by to help us pick the winner, Russell Clark. He was so excited to win. Readers may be interested to know that these wreaths -- some 5,000 -- are donated by the Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington, Maine. The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths, but covers the trucking expense as well. He's done this since 1992. A wonderful guy. Also, most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to DC with this event to help out. Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is in one the poorest parts of the state.

Tips for Children

Everyone who has children knows how difficult it can be to get kids to brush their teeth. So this week, we are sharing tips to get kids to not only brush their teeth, but hopefully enjoy it and get the whole family involved!

1. Buy children their own toothbrush. Their are dozens of toothbrushes on the market, available in sizes for infants to adolescents. They come in all different colors, some have cartoon characters, and some even light up and play music. If your child helps pick out the toothbrush they like, they are more inclined to want to brush their teeth.

2. Buy a child-friendly toothpaste. Adult toothpastes with tartar control and whitening properties often don't taste good to children. So, invest in a toothpaste for kids. They come in glitter, different flavors, and feature different characters on the tubes.

3. When it comes time to brush, get the whole family involved. Children, especially little ones, love to imitate grown-ups. If the entire family brushes their teeth at the same time, children are more likely to brush, and also witness the positive example their parents are providing.

4. To get children to brush for a full two minutes, play their favorite song. They have to brush the entire length of the song before they are finished. This makes a game of brushing, and everyone gets to listen to music in the morning!

5. Don't make going to the dentist a scary prospect. Children pick up on their parents' anxieties, and will pay attention to words like "hurt" or "pain." If kids think going to the dentist is an adventure, they will be more likely to enjoy going, and will go their whole lives!

Remember, good dental habits start when we are young. Teach your children to properly care for their teeth, and they will take care of them for life!

Valentine's Dance

This past Friday, February 13, Dr. Wood and Cypress Family Dental hosted a Valentine's Day dinner and dance in appreciate for their loyal patients 60 and over. With a catered roast beef dinner, live music provided by the Stephan Gamboa band, and a fantastic turnout, the first ever Valentine's Dinner and Dance was a fantastic success!
